Roald Dahls

Anansi and Turtle

Looking at the title and image on the first page, what do you think the story is about?
About a turtle and a spider. Also their grandmother was telling  them one of her moonlight stories .

What are some of the features of traditional tales and fables? What makes them different from other stories we read?
How traditional stories are told by their grandparents and great great grandparents .Also it could be passed on to the next generation .

Where is the story set? You need to identify and look up where this country is.
In the beginning of the story we see that they are telling tales under the moonlight, why are tales often told under moonlight?
So the story can sound more interesting and frightened also This story has been set in nigeria . Nigeria is and city in the north africa .

We know that this story is ‘retold’ what does the word ‘retold’ mean and can you give an example/ explain further?
Its how you like tell them a story and then you tell them again also it means Past and past participle of retell .

What does the word ‘customary’ mean? What is customary in your culture? (Maybe sharing a meal, or giving someone a compliment)
Customary means another term for custumal , and also it means the same as custom and conventional .

Predict what you think will happen next in the story?
Turtle will probably go out and hunt for food . Also he might get into a seriously problem that it might cause and action .

What are tricks and how might Anansi trick turtle?
It means a skilful act performed for entertainment or amusement, and Anansi might lie to turtle .

4-6

Summarise what has happened in the story - this needs to be in your own words.
Granma has told them a story about the yoruba tribe in the moonlight. The turtle has come back from hunting food.

Why are they washing their hands?so they could not spread germs. When do you wash your hands? Before you have dinner. What might happen next? They're gonna have dinner now. Why do you think that?Because crabs cooking and they went too go wash their hands so they must be having dinner.

Tell me about manners and family routines Thank you , please , respect , kind , be kind too the teacher.Get up , get ready brush your teeth, have a shower, make my lunch , walk to school .  –  We know that in the story Anansi apologises in the first line then tells Turtle off again for having dirty hands.

“What might happen next?Anansi might trick turtle and tell him to go wash his hands  and try and eat the most.” “Who is the cleverer of the two?Anansi because he is very brave too trick turtle  ” Think about the fact that Turtle has worked out that Anansi knows Turtle’s hands will get dirty. What might Turtle do?Go and wash it quickly and race back so their would be more food left.

Wednesday:

What does the terms “All the same” mean on the new page? Think about the fact that the writer has begun the new page with “all the same”
He means that anansi doesnt know that turtle walks on his hands so every time he goes to the river and the comes back a heap sand a sticked to his hands.

Have a look at careful language of manners – Turtle thanks Anansi and invites him to dinner. Why do you think Turtle is so polite? Because he doesn’t fight like the other people

Anansi’s eyes “bulged” – discuss what this means and why his eyes would bulge. What does this tell us about the character of Anansi?
Anansi ‘s eyes turned bulged  maybe because turtle didn't wash his hands properly
Bulged - swell or protrude to an incongruous extent.

Identify the setting and how it is different from the place Anansi lives. What do think may happen next?Anansi might let turtle stay over a bit and  like find a place for turtle or   let turtle go out to live.

Use the words and illustrations to consider the food Turtle has prepared and how this fits with the traditional story feature of animals with human characteristics. They have prepared looks like yams .

Anansi needs food, how will Anansi get down? What will Turtle do?Turtle will hunt for food for Anansi will cook it

After reading the story who was smarter? Why do you think this?Turtle

What are the features of traditional tales and how does story fit the familiar patterns, including the ending? On page 7 it shows turtle  eating fruits carrots and looks like potatoes

Friday:

How did Anansi tricked Turtle?By telling turtle to go and wash his hands but when he  came back Anansi had already started eating the yams .     – “What did he use? ” Turtle used the same trick on Anansi?

Traditional stories often have a message or moral. think, pair, and share their ideas for what the message might be?
Its about a turtle that meets up with a spider named anansi
anansi cooked turtle some yams but he also got tricked.Because The told him to go and wash his hands but when the came back  anansi had already started eating.

Write a story of their own based on a traditional tale format; use a known tale and turn it into a Turtle/Anansi story; or create a fable around a problem scenario.
OR you can retell this or other stories from the point of view of another character.

In the northern coast there was a turtle named aniqua, she had come back from travelling a long way around the world. As she came out of the sea onto the shore she had met a spider named anansi they had been friends since school. But Aniqua thought that anansi wouldn't have  forgot about her . But the Aniqua her someone call her name it was anansi she had invited Aniqua too dinner. But when she went over anansi sent Aniqua to wash her hands but then anansi had already started eating. Aniqua came back and there was only a little bit left.Aniqua wasn't that angry but anyway she was happy again.
